The Hitcher starts the excellent Rutger Hauer as a killer-on-the-road whose powers approach (and some believe transcend) the supernatural. Hauer's nameless hitch-hiker catches a ride with a lone young man (C. Thomas Howell) and turns his life into a living nightmare.
Near Dark, which reunited three stars of James Cameron's Aliens, is simply one of the finest vampire movies ever made. I'm one tough sell when it comes to vampires. I always give props to Bela Lugosi and Christopher Lee. But I really, really loathe the Anne Rice-inspired flavor of wimpy, whiny, prissy vampires who bitch and preen and moan about being immortal. I say: Shaddup, deal with it, and drink some goddamned blood ... which is exactly what the twisted dysfunctional family of Near Dark does with grisly aplomb.
